Windows Change Remote Desktop Port

Worked on IT but never used remote desktop connection tools, it is certainly not possible to find such a sound. Almost every IT professional uses this remote access tool. Using remote desktop tools graphically access possible to any computer which is connected to the network. A corporate user can use his desktop computer without having his own desk. Even a user can use his office computer while sitting at home. By using remote desktop tools we can do this easily. Although there are more third-party tools to do this work. But here, we will only discuss about Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Tool.

This tool works with the service that is called ""Remote Desktop Service". And we know that a dedicated port number works behind on each service. This service's port number is 3389. Thinking about security, many of us would like to change this default port. How to change this default port, we will discuss this issue in this article.

The port number used for remote desktop service has been set to the registry of windows. So, if we want to change this port number, then it needs to be changed from the registry. This 3389 port number is saved in a 32-bit DWORD value in the registry. The path of this DWORD value is:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> TerminalServer -> WinStations -> RDP-Tcp

Here from the right panel, you will find a DWORD value named "Port Number". And with this value 3389 number has been set. By opening the DWORD value with a double click, we can change the number as per our requirement.

The Entire process is shown through the screenshot.

At first, open the registry editor tool. To open this tool, execute the following command into the "RUN" (Windows key + r) program.

regedit

After opening the registry editor tool, expand "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".

Now, expand "System" then "CurrentControlSet" and then "Control"

Expand "Terminal Server", then "WinStations" and then "Rdp-tcp". Now double clink on "PortNumber" DWORD value from the right panel.

Now click on "Decimal" and change the "Value data" as your requirement.

After changing the value press "OK" and close the registry editor. It's maybe required to restart your computer.

Since we are not accessing the remote desktop with the default port, we need to specify the port number when connecting. Such as 1.1.1.1:4008. That is, you have to specify the port number with (:) colon sign. Just like the following:-

Everything is done.
