VMware Windows Cannot be Installed to This Disk

During the installation of the "Windows 8" operating system or above and the "Windows Server 2008" or above in the "VMware Workstation", we face the below error message.

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style".

One screenshot has been attached for this error message.

If the firmware type has been selected as "BIOS" then that error message has appeared. Generally, the operating system "Windows 8" or above and the server operating system "Windows Server 2008" or above are designed for "UEFI" firmware type.

That's why we are getting that error message if we are using the BIOS firmware type during the operating system installation. To resolve this issue just change your current firmware type to the "UEFI" firmware type.

To change this firmware type, just right-click your virtual machine and click on the "Settings" menu. Now navigate to the "Options" tab. Then go to the "Advanced" option. From there change the firmware type to "UEFI" under the "Firmware Type" section.

In below, the whole process is showed graphically.

At first, Right-click your virtual machine and go to the "Settings" menu. Please make sure the VM is powered off. In this tutorial, we assume that our VM name is "Windows Server 2016 (2)".

Now navigate to the "Options" tab and go to the "Advanced" option.

Now change firmware type to the "UEFI" mode from the "BIOS" under the "Firmware type" section.

That's it. Now save the changes and restart your windows installation process. Hope this time no error messages will display regarding the operating system installation.
